Approximately 55 shots were created featuring Xerxes and his Persian General negotiating the surrender of King Leonidas and his Spartan army. All foreground plates were shot on bluescreen and involved the compositing of CG backgrounds. Complex camera moves required extensive 3D tracking and matchmoving to create a seamless environment. Shots were roughly broken up into 4 main camera angles: looking towards King Leonidas with the Hot Gates behind him, towards Xerxes and the Persians, out towards the sea and looking up towards the mass of Persian archers. |
| Although this shot stands alone in the sequence, it sets the look for the entire batch of shots that follow. The foreground plate, augmented with additional soldiers and treated to appear more in silhouette, is composited against multiple layers of the hero sky. |
| Shots looking back at Xerxes, the General or the Persian army required a matte painting of the distant mountains and a treated sky for the background. Additional Persian soldier elements were added to increase their numbers. Practical bluescreen banners and spears were then added along with multiple layers of CG and practical dust. | ||

| Looking back towards King Leonidas required more elements. In addition to the massive "Hot Gates" behind him and the Spartans, certain shots feature the ocean. The "Hot Gates" were created in CG, while the ocean was created using a combination of CG water and live action ocean plates. Multiple layers of mist and color correction mattes were integrated in order to achieve the final look. The sky, which was highly integrated into the ocean plate, required "God-Rays" as a finishing touch. | ||

| Select shots were angled up towards the Persian Archers. Additional CG rocks were added to extend the practical set. The sky played a prominent role in these shots. Specific interactive lighting was added to the CG rocks, practical set, and Archers. | |
